What Causes Hair Loss

Losing or thinning hair is generally considered a normal part of aging and affects both men and women alike. Hair loss can be temporary or permanent but it is typically the case that hair loss is related to one or more of the following factors:

  • Heredity: The primary cause is androgenetic alopecia, or male-pattern and female-pattern baldness, which progresses gradually with age.
  • Hormonal Changes and Medical Conditions: Pregnancy, childbirth, menopause, thyroid problems, alopecia areata, scalp infections like ringworm, and trichotillomania can lead to temporary or permanent hair loss.
  • Medications and Supplements: Certain prescriptions for cancer, arthritis, depression, heart issues, gout, and high blood pressure may cause hair loss as a side effect.
  • Radiation Therapy: Treatment to the head area might lead to hair not growing back the same as before.
  • Stressful Events: Physical or emotional shocks can result in temporary hair loss.
  • Hairstyles and Treatments: Excessive hairstyling or tight hairstyles can cause traction alopecia.

Hair Loss and Men

Male pattern baldness, or androgenetic alopecia (AGA), dominates hair loss in men, constituting 95% of cases. By age 35, over two-thirds of American men experience hair loss, escalating to 85% by age 50. Approximately 35 million men in the United States grapple with AGA, marked by hair follicle miniaturization in specific scalp regions.

While some embrace the "bald is beautiful" mantra, others, especially those starting to bald early, find it distressing, impacting personal and professional aspects. The quest for solutions is real, with the booming market for hair restoration. Light therapy complements existing treatments (prescription drugs, PRP, stem cells, transplant surgery) to maximize hair growth outcomes.

Hair Loss and Women

Hair loss is not a strictly male health concern. While suffering mostly in silence, women make up a significant percentage of those who suffer from hair loss. According to the American Academy of Dermatology, 40% of women have visible hair loss by the time they are age 40. Many procedures and products are marketed to men to help with hair loss, while women are relegated to thickening shampoos and collagen supplements.

Hair loss in women can have an emotional toll impacting their self-image and potentially their mental and emotional well-being. For many women, this can be a life-altering condition. Women no longer need to suffer in silence.

For those seeking alternatives, options like minoxidil (Rogaine®) and finasteride (Propecia) exist, but surgery's cost and potential side effects prompt many to explore drug-free, pain-free alternatives.

Red Light for Hair Growth and Baldness

Complete hair loss or baldness typically refers to excessive hair loss from the scalp. Hereditary hair loss with age is the most common cause of baldness. Some people prefer to let their hair loss run its course untreated and unhidden. Others may cover it up with hairstyles, makeup, hats or scarves. Today many men and women around the world are taking advantage of FDA-cleared red light therapy devices to treat and prevent further hair loss.

Understanding Hair Loss At The Follicle Level

Understanding the timing of hair loss is crucial before initiating treatment. Essentially, while hair is lost, the hair follicle remains intact, anchoring the hair to the skin. Within each follicle lies a hair bulb housing the papilla and matrix, the epicenter of hair growth initiation.

Our hair comprises keratin, a protein forming the hair shaft. When these essential components of the hair puzzle fail to function optimally, the conducive environment for proper hair growth is compromised.

How does light therapy work for hair growth?

Light energy is absorbed by mitochondria in our cells, promoting an increase in cellular metabolism and the production of ATP (adenosine triphosphate), which is essential for cellular function and energy.

Red light therapy benefits to the scalp and hair follices:

  1. Increased Blood Flow: The light energy stimulates the release of nitric oxide, leading to vasodilation and increased blood flow in the scalp. Improved circulation enhances the delivery of nutrients and oxygen to the hair follicles.
  2. Activation of Stem Cells: The light therapy activates dormant hair follicles and promotes the proliferation of hair stem cells. This activation contributes to the initiation of the hair growth cycle.
  3. Extended Anagen Phase: The therapy helps prolong the anagen (growth) phase of the hair growth cycle, leading to longer and thicker hair.

Serums and Topicals To Address Hair Growth

A proven, complementary method to red light therapy for combating hair loss is to provide active ingredients, nutrients, and support to the scalp and follicles through topicals and hair serums. Our scalp is subjected to abuse from all types of sources like harsh weather, shampoos and conditioners, hair spray, hair dryers, dirt, headwear, and even while we sleep with our heads pressing into our pillow while we sleep. Just like our minds and bodies can suffer due to lack of food and vitamins, our scalp and follicles can become compromised through toxins and depletion of key nutrients to support healthy hair growth.

Backed by scientific research, there are popular non-prescription topicals that are highly effective at detoxifying the scalp, treating dormant hair follicles, increasing hair volume, and promoting the growth of new hair. Examples of key ingredients include natural peptides, B-vitamins, biotin, and technologies like Redensyl, Capixyl, Anargy, and more. Many of the available ingredients and formulas, when used in combination, offer a targeted, safe, effective, and non-prescription solution for hair restoration.

Clean formulation with 3 clinically optimized ingredient technologies to support healthy hair volume and density.

  • Redensyl™ (3%) – A glycine and zinc technology that helps support follicle health

  • Anargy™ (1%) – Plant-based protein technology that detoxifies and supports hair root health

It also has several other supporting vitamins, such as Niacinimide (Vitamin B3), ProVitamine B5, and Biotin (B7), each well-known for their ability to promote healthy hair and follicle function. This potent blend, along with select skin and hair-loving ingredients, detoxifies your scalp and roots, strengthening hair and enhancing density for your best hair yet.

LED Red Light Therapy for Hair Loss

Light therapy for hair can be an effective stand-alone therapy or adjunctive therapy to medication and topical prescriptions for optimal hair regrowth. Dermatologists and medical practitioners specializing in hair restoration can ensure proper diagnosis and treatment recommendations. Individuals should consult with their physician for a correct diagnosis and to determine if light therapy is suitable for their category of hair loss.

Is the Celluma RESTORE Right for You?

The Norwood Hamilton Scale and Ludwig-Savin Scale are used to help determine if light therapy will work for an individual. Celluma is not FDA-cleared to treat the stages of hair loss that are greyed out on both scales.
